Toyota’s “biggest investment ever” into a production line to produce the 3-litre turbocharged engine parts is finally here, according to the company’s CEO, Tadashi Kato.
“Toyota is finally making the final step towards production of the 3.5 liter engine,” said Kato, speaking to reporters at the Tokyo Motor Show on Thursday.
“We’re now ready to deliver the final parts for the engine and get the assembly underway.
We are also now ready for the production of these parts.”
The announcement comes just over a week after Toyota announced it was planning to start producing its 4Runner sedan and a new hatchback.
The new turbocharged V6 engine was introduced in 2016 to boost performance of the base model of the 4Runner, which has been redesigned to use a twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
The 4Runner now comes with a 1.5-litres (6.3-cu-in) turbocharged version of the same 1.4-litred engine, with a maximum output of 707bhp (463kW).
The 1.6-litruc turbocharged 2.0-litrid engine is available with the 1.8-litr 4Runner.
The production of 3.0 liter (5.5 cu-in), 1.7-litrin and 1.9-litron engines was also delayed until 2021, while the production plan for the 1 liter V6 and 2 liter V8 engines was cancelled in the early 2020s.
“In order to keep our manufacturing costs low and our production of parts affordable, we have decided to delay the 3 liter turbocharged production until 2021,” said Takashi Tabata, president of Toyota Motor Corp. (TMC), in a statement on Wednesday.
“This decision is not due to a shortage of parts but to protect the future of the business.”
A few months later, the Japanese automaker said it was ready to launch the production production of 2 liter engines in 2019.
But it stopped short of confirming the date.
Toyota has been in the business of producing engines for decades, building the most advanced turbocharged engines in the world.
It began in 1971 with the 2 liter turbo, which can go from 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds and top out at 170mph.
It later introduced the turbocharged 3 liter, and in 1998 Toyota introduced the supercharged 3.7 liter, which is the biggest engine in the company.
It has been producing the turbo for the last 12 years.
It also makes the 2.5 litre V6, which produces 740bhp at 4,600rpm and is used on the Toyota Corolla sedan and the Scion xB.
The 2.6 liter V-6 is used in the Toyota Camry and the Toyota Prius.
Toyota is also the only automaker in the industry to produce engines for the entire range of compact cars.
Toyota’s new 3- liter engine is based on the 2-liter version of a turbocharged Toyota engine, which was introduced with the 3 series cars in the late 1980s.
The company has also introduced the 3L turbocharged, a turbo-charged version for use in the 1 and 2-litrevving Toyota Camrys and the 2L V-8 used in Toyota’s Prius hatchback and the new Corolla hatchback SUV.
In its statement, TMC said it plans to “deliver the final production of this turbocharged 1.0L engine as soon as possible”.
“We expect to complete the assembly of the final part for the 3LP engine by the end of the year,” it said.
“As of now, we will continue to make the 3 L turbocharged available to customers, but we are unable to provide any more details at this time.”
The Japanese automakent company said it expects to deliver between 500,000 and 600,000 units of the new turbo-powered engine by 2021.
“At this point, we are still very focused on completing the assembly and finalizing the final specification for the turbo, and we have to make sure that we meet all our deadlines for the first production of a 3L engine,” Tabata said.
Toyota said it is planning to introduce an advanced version of its 3L V6 in 2019 and a 3.6L V8 in 2020.
“For us, it’s about making the right decisions and making the best decisions at the right time,” said Tabata.
